Professor Dr. Shahida Wizarat, Dean of College of Economics & Social Development and Head of the Department, Economics is an independent economist and has been involved in research, teaching and administration. Her areas of interest are industrial economics focusing on industrial productivity, its determinants; concentration and profitability; development economic issues; economic policies; debt and its management; natural resources, conflict and growth; political economy and governance issues. She is the author of forty-five research papers and articles published in journals of international repute in Pakistan and abroad. She has organized, attended and read papers at several international and national conferences. She earned her PhD in Economics from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, England and an MA in Economics from Vanderbilt University, USA. She has served as the Editor of the Pakistan Journal of Applied Economics and Director of the Applied Economics Research Center, University of Karachi. She has also served on the Board of Directors of the Karachi Stock Exchange. She is on advisory boards and research councils of several organizations and universities.

  • Attended a workshop on technology information services organized by the National Center for Technology Transfer, Islamabad and the Asian and Pacific Center for Transfer of Technology. February 7‑10, 1987.
  • Read a paper on prospects of trade between ECO countries at the Asian Regional Cooperation Conference, November 1992, at Islamabad.
  • Guest Speaker at the National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA), Karachi; Custom House, Karachi; Rotary Clubs in Pakistan and the US.
  • Organized a Conference on `Economic Reforms and The Role of the Government.’ Invited Pakistani and German economic experts to deliberate upon the impact of World Bank and IMF policies on the economies of developing countries, particularly Pakistan.  The Conference was held between 18th – 20th November 1993 at the Sheraton Hotel Karachi. Papers read at the conference were later edited and published in the papers and proceedings issue of the Pakistan Journal of Applied Economics (PJAE).
  • Organized a Conference on `The Socio-Economic and Political Consequences of World Bank and IMF Policies’.  Invited economic experts of international repute from England, Germany, Austria, Australia and Pakistan to focus upon the economic, social and political consequences of developing economies, particularly Pakistan.  The conference was held between 22 – 24 September 1994 at the Sheraton Hotel, Karachi.
  • Development of Economic Integration Among the SAARC Countries, paper read at the seminar organized by the SAARC Chamber in Islamabad on 24-25 September, 1995.
  • Read a paper on The Impact of World Bank-IMF Policies on the Political Structure in Pakistan at a conference on Labour, Human Rights and Globalization held in Melbourne, Australia, 6-8 December, 1996.
  • The Impact of Foreign Borrowing on our Political Structure, Paper read at the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) Seminar and published in their papers and proceedings and later in the Business Recorder, 31 December, 1996.
